One Dead After Car, School Bus Collide

Provincial police say a Sarnia woman was killed in a head-on collision involving a car and a school bus south of London.

The collision happened around 7:15am Thursday and involved a southbound school bus and a northbound black sedan on Highbury Ave. near Thompson Line.

The force of the crash left the sedan wedged under the bus. Its driver, 37-year-old Del Daley of Sarnia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no children on the bus at the time of the collision and the bus driver was not hurt.

"Central Elgin Fire and St. Thomas paramedics did attend the scene. They assessed the bus driver. No one was taken to hospital," said Constable Adam Crewdson.

OPP Technical Collision Investigators are probing the cause of the crash.

Even though the winter driving season is behind us, Crewdson said drivers need to continue to focus on the road when behind the wheel.

"If people think they can let their guard down because winter is over, they are sadly mistaken," said Crewdson. "This is when we see an uptick in collisions and serious collisions. So we are telling drivers that even though the weather has changed you still have to remain vigilant. If it's raining, if it is foggy, anything that is affecting normal driving conditions, you have to slow down and give extra attention to the roadway."

Highbury Ave. between Glanworth Dr. and Ferguson Line was closed to all traffic for several hours. It was reopened around 2:30pm.

Anyone in the area at the time of the collision that has not spoken to police is asked to contact the Elgin County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
