UPDATE: Toronto Attack Suspect Charged With Murder

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is calling a deadly incident on a busy Toronto street Monday a "senseless attack and a horrific tragedy."

He made those comments Tuesday morning and took some questions from reporters, but still couldn't provide an answer as to why the apparent attack took place.

"Obviously all Canadians will continue to have questions about why this happened," says Trudeau. "As was indicated [Monday night] by our public security minister, at this time, we have no reason to suspect there is any national security element to this attack, but obviously the investigations continue."

Police in Toronto raised the death toll from the attack to ten people Monday night, adding that another 15 people were hurt after a rental van jumped a curb and plowed into pedestrians.

The man who was arrested in connection with the case, 25-year-old Alek Minassian from Richmond Hill, is now charged with ten counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder.

While a motive still isn't clear, Trudeau says Canadians cannot live in fear of further attacks.

"We need to focus on doing what we can and we must to keep Canadians safe while we stay true to the freedoms and values that we all as Canadians hold dear," says Trudeau.

During his statement Tuesday morning, Trudeau also took the opportunity to praise the first responders who were called to the scene.

"They handled this extremely difficult situation with professionalism and bravery," says Trudeau. "They faced danger without a moment of hesitation and there is no doubt their courage saved lives and prevented further injuries."
