Snow Possible This Week

The calendar may read spring but parts of southwestern Ontario could see snow before the end of the week.

According to Environment Canada, a cold front moving in on Wednesday could see rain change to wet snow during the day as the temperature hovers around the freezing mark. While the chance of any mid-week accumulation is slim, a system moving across Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, London-Middlesex, and Oxford County late Thursday into Friday could be a different story.

"The latest track information that I've been looking at shows that early Friday period could see wintry conditions and snow on the ground," said Environment Canada meteorologist Mitch Meredith. "So everybody kind of needs to be prepared for more winter and some difficult travelling with any snow that gets on the ground."

Overnight temperatures are expected to fall below freezing on Wednesday night, going as low as -8 C by Friday evening, the national weather agency predicts. The average overnight low for this time of year is -1 C.

Unseasonably cool temperatures are expected to continue to grip the region throughout much of the month of April.

"Often we get a little more of a break with warmer daytime highs. So even though normals for this time of year are around 9 C, you can sometimes see almost up to 20 C some days," said Meredith. "But that isn't happening this year. I don't think we will get a double-digit temperature around here for a couple of weeks."

The week, which is turning out to be a bit of a mixed bag, could also include a thunderstorm late Tuesday and strong winds early Wednesday. Both of which could prompt Environment Canada to issue related weather statements, according to Meredith.

Sunshine is expected to return to the area on Saturday and Sunday with daytime highs around 1 C and 4 C.
