Defective Smoke Alarms Recalled

The London Fire Department is recommending people check their smoke alarms to see if they are among the 40,000 being recalled by Health Canada.

The affected alarms are made by Kidde and are model numbers PI2010CA and PI9010CA. According to the fire department, the alarms have a yellow cap inside that may block one of the two smoke sensors and compromise the alarm, making it unable to alert residents to a fire.

“I’m concerned that many people may not hear about the recall and, if they do, they may not reinstall the alarm they take down," said Acting Deputy Fire Chief Jack Burt in a statement issued Friday. "Any person who needs clarification on the details of the recall can contact the fire department at 519-661-4565.”

A recall notice from Kidde says people should take the alarm down from the ceiling and turn it on its side. The yellow cap should be visible through openings on the side. If the cap is there, the smoke alarm is one of the models affected by the recall and will need to be replaced.
