Health, Child Care Enhancements Promised In Throne Speech

Reducing hospital wait times, greater mental health services, and an expanded OHIP+ program are just some of the areas the Ontario government will focus on in its final pre-election budget.

The significant new spending promises were teased during the speech from the throne delivered by Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell on Monday.

The speech touched on the priorities of the Liberal government ahead of the June 7 election but offered no specifics regarding the investments. The detailed numbers are expected to be released in the budget on March 28.

Throughout the final parliamentary session before Ontarians go to the polls, the Liberals say they plan to significantly increasing hospital operating budgets to help reduce wait times. They intend to enhance access to home care for seniors while providing financial assistance to those caring for elderly family members.

Money will be earmarked to expand the OHIP+ program beyond those under the age of 25 so more people without drug and dental benefits can get more affordable prescription drugs and dental care.

The throne speech also hinted at new investments in mental health and addition services, and steps to lower child care costs.

"I hear from people every day who put caring first — whether it’s at home, caring for their families, or at work, caring for patients, students or society’s most vulnerable people," said Premier Kathleen Wynne in a statement. "The people of Ontario are our greatest strength, and our government doesn’t accept that anyone should be left to fend for themselves, particularly in this turbulent, changing economy. We’re taking bold steps to ensure the best care for our children, our seniors and our friends and family members. Our plan will relieve pressure on families by making it easier for people to care for themselves and for each other."

PC Leader Doug Ford was quick to criticize the Liberals ambitious list of priorities. In a statement issued after the throne speech was read, Ford accused Wynne of writing cheques that are going to bounce.

“Kathleen Wynne has made commitments on billions in new spending for expensive re-election promises in a desperate attempt to try and save her government. The Liberals are trying to buy votes from a few of us, instead of trying to fix our province for all of us," said Ford. “Ontario is the most indebted province or state in the world. We can’t afford to further mortgage our future any longer.

The soon to be unveiled budget will run a deficit with a "clear path" back into the black to be outlined, Dowdeswell said in the speech from the throne.
