Woman Killed Trying To Stop Truck Theft

London police are looking for a suspect after a fatal hit and run in the east end.

Around 8:35pm, police say a stolen black Chevrolet pickup truck was spotted in the area of Hamilton Rd. and Egerton St. The truck was found abandoned in the area of Moffatt Ave. and Vancouver St. about 10 minutes later. Not long after that, a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup was stolen from the driveway of a nearby home. A 32-year-old woman tried to stop the thief from leaving in the truck, but was hit. She was rushed to hospital, but died of her injuries. She has been identified as Christina Smith of London.

The Silverado was found this morning in the area of Clarke Rd. and Trafalgar St.

This marks the second time in recent months in which a person in London died after being hit by a vehicle while trying to stop a theft. Deborah Titus, 64, died in November after she was hit by an SUV in an east London parking lot. She had been trying to stop a woman who had stolen money from her. Brittany Boyce, 29, later pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Anyone with information in relation to this incident is asked to call the London Police Service at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
