OPP Urges Drivers To Stay Safe After 32 Collisions In Three Days

Norfolk County OPP is giving drivers tips to stay safe this holiday weekend after responding to 32 collisions in the past three days.

According to the OPP, the collisions took place between Thursday and Saturday.

"The OPP reminds you to drive with extra care this winter and to always drive according to weather and road conditions.  Stay alert, slow down and stay in control," says Norfolk County OPP Inspector Lisa Anderson.

Police recommend drivers slow down when it is snowing or slushy out. Also, breaking can take longer in the snow, so drivers should look ahead to recognize any dangers or hazards in advance.

It is also important to know that bridges and overpasses freeze more quickly and stay frozen longer.

The OPP recommends that drivers check weather and travel conditions before heading out and allow extra travel time. Drivers can call 511 or go online to receive up-to-date road conditions.

Police say it is also a good idea to carry a winter survival kit when you travel. These kits can include extra clothing, winter boots, blankets, and snack foods. Having a candle and waterproof matches can also help heat the inside of your vehicle if it stalls or you become stranded.
