Inmate Dead At EMDC

For the fourth time this year, there has been an inmate death at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre.

Police were called to the provincial jail on Exeter Rd. regarding the death of an unidentified inmate on Saturday.

"We are assisting the coroner with an investigation of a death. Foul play is not suspected," said Constable Sandasha Bough.

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services confirmed the inmate was initially found in "medical distress." No other details about the death have been released.

"It would be inappropriate for the ministry to comment further as a number of investigations are underway," said ministry spokesperson Andrew Morrison in an emailed statement.

The coroner is investigating the cause and manner of the death, while the ministry is conducting an internal investigation to determine whether all ministry policies and procedures were followed with respect to care and custody of the individual.

Since June, there has been three other deaths at the jail.

In August, a male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell after an apparent drug overdose and was pronounced dead shortly after police and paramedics arrived. A month earlier, a 47-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell, although it isn't known whether his death was related to an existing heart condition or illicit drug use. A 52-year-old inmate died in hospital on June 6, one day after attempting suicide in his cell.

The EMDC has been repeatedly thrust into the spotlight over the past several years as it has dealt with overcrowding, inadequate staffing levels, and other inmate deaths.
