St. Thomas Police Investigating Possible Hate Crime

A suspect is facing charges after a man wielding a baseball bat was captured on video screaming "terrorists" and "ISIS" and attacking a family in a St. Thomas mall parking lot.

St. Thomas police were called to Elgin Mall around 4:30pm Thursday and are now investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.

A video captured at the scene shows a man getting out of a white BMW and confronting the family. In the video, he appears to swing the bat at a member of the family. Police say the victim suffered a cracked rib and extensive bruising.

Warning: the video, posted to Twitter, contains profane language.

The man took off in his car, but around 9pm, police say a suspect was arrested in south London. A 36-year-old man is charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. Police say his last known address is in Toronto. The suspect was held in custody pending a bail hearing Friday.
