Malcolm Young, the legendary founder and guitarist of AC/DC, has died.

Young had suffered from dementia for several years and was surrounded by his family when he died at the age of 64 on Saturday morning.

"Renowned for his musical prowess Malcolm was a songwriter, guitarist, performer, producer and visionary who inspired many," said a statement issued by the Young family. "From the outset, he knew what he wanted to achieve and, along with his younger brother, took to the world stage giving their all at every show. Nothing less would do for their fans."

A message posted to the band's Facebook page spoke of Young's commitment to music and his fans.

"With enormous dedication and commitment he was the driving force behind the band. As a guitarist, songwriter and visionary he was a perfectionist and a unique man. He always stuck to his guns and did and said exactly what he wanted. He took great pride in all that he endeavored. His loyalty to the fans was unsurpassed."

His brother Angus Young said it is hard to express in words what Young had meant to him, noting they had a "unique and very special"

"The bond we had was. He leaves behind an enormous legacy that will live on forever," said Angus.

Messages of condolence to Young's family can be posted on the Sydney Morning Herald tribute site for Malcolm Young later Saturday. The family asks that instead of flowers, donations be made to the Salvation Army.
