Drunk Driving Charge Laid After Near Miss

A 39-year-old North Middlesex man is accused of drunk driving after a vehicle nearly collided head-on with an OPP cruiser northwest of London.

The officer was heading north on Queen St. in Ailsa Craig when a southbound pick-up truck veered into the northbound lanes around 9:45pm on Saturday. The officer was able to avoid the crash, then made a u-turn and pulled the suspect vehicle over.

Police allege the driver said he left his lane while reaching for a cellphone, but the officer determined the man had been drinking. He was arrested and taken to the police detachment for breathalyzer tests.

A 39-year-old North Middlesex man is charged with impaired driving offences, including driving with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in blood. His vehicle has been impounded for seven days while his licence is suspended for 90 days.
