Company Fined After Worker Critically Injured In Fall

A Watford construction company is facing a hefty fine after one of its workers fell around 22 ft from a barn roof in Middlesex Centre.

The Ministry of Labour says on November 4, 2015, two workers employed by Thomson Construction Ltd. were constructing a hog barn on Thirteen Mile Rd., when a defective strap broke and one of the workers fell to the ground.

The worker suffered critical injuries and was rushed to hospital.

The ministry says the worker was not protected by any method of fall protection, and there was no fall arrest system to protect him/her from a fall.

As a result, Thomson Construction Ltd. pleaded guilty on Tuesday to failing to ensure that the proper safety measures and procedures were provided.  The company has been fined $50,000 and will also have to pay a 25% victim surcharge, as required by the Provincial Offences Act.
