Heat Records Keep Falling

The start of the new week has brought another day of record breaking heat in London.

At 11am Monday, Environment Canada reported the temperature in London was 28 C. That broke the old record for September 25 of 26.7 C that was set in 1958.

The September heat wave also broke records in London on the weekend. Saturday's high of 32.2 C broke the record of 28.3 C set in 1959, while Sunday's 32.2 C broke the 1970 record of 28.3 C.

Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson says the heat is the result of a high pressure system has parked itself over the Great Lakes.

“Acting like a big heat pump, bringing northwards very warm and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico," he says. "It’s also a very stable pattern, it’s not going anywhere, it’s parked itself there, and we’ve already had a number of days of the hot and humid weather, and we’ve got a few more days left to go.”

Coulson says it’s pretty rare for it to be this warm this late in September.

“I’ve been doing this for over 30 years, I’ve seen some warm September days, but not this type of stretch of weather," he says. "Not this many days in a row where consistently we’re dealing with this type of heat and this type of humidity. This particular setup is pretty rare.”

Coulson says it's possible another record could be broken on Tuesday. The forecast for London calls for a high temperature of 31 C, which would break the record for September 26 of 29.4 C, set in 1998.
