Kids Can Cool Off At City Spray Pads

Children in London will be able to beat the heat this weekend at two of the city's spray pads.

In light of hot and humid weekend weather expected across the region, London's Aquatic Services reopened the spray pad at the Forks of the Thames and will be reopening the Gibbons Park spray pad.

"The one at the Forks of the Thames is open now until Sunday. The one at Gibbons Park will be opening Saturday and Sunday, as there is some tree work being done around the spray pads. We just have to wait for that to be finished first," said Lisa Brandie, aquatic services supervisor. "We will continue to monitor the weather and if it stays hot we are happy to keep them open longer."

Spray pads and outdoor pools across the city are shut down for the season at the end of the Labour Day weekend. But while spray pads can easily be restarted, Brandie said the outdoor pools are a different story.

"Our outdoor pools are all closed for the season because it takes us quite awhile to winterize them all," said Brandie. "The secondary reason is a lot of our staff go away to school in September, so we have lost a large contingent of our summer staff."

Environment Canada expects temperatures to soar to 31 C Saturday and Sunday. With the humidity it will feel closer to 40 C both days.
