One Dead, One Missing After Plane Crash Near Goderich

Provincial police say one person is dead and another missing after a small plane crashed into Lake Huron near Goderich.

A witness reported seeing an airplane that appeared to be flying in distress near the Goderich Municipal "Sky Harbour" Airport shortly before 8:45pm on Wednesday.

Emergency crews flooded the area, searching on foot, boat, and aircraft for any sign of the troubled plane.

Searchers found a woman in the water, surrounded by debris from a small fixed-wing airplane approximately 1.5 km from the shoreline west of the airport around 2:30am on Thursday.   She was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Crews continue to search the area for a second person who was on the plane.

Members of the OPP Underwater Search & Recovery Unit were to join the search Thursday.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada and Huron OPP are investigating the crash.

The Goderich airport is open, however pilots are being told to call ahead as there are a few restrictions in place.
