Over 100 lead footed drivers were nailed for speeding this weekend in a police blitz on Hwy. 401 and 402 in the London region.
Middlesex OPP say 137 tickets for speeding and one for stunt driving were issued during the two-day crackdown. Police attribute the significant number of tickets doled out to a higher than normal police presence on the busy highways.
"The four causal factors for injury and/or death on OPP patrolled roadways are speeding, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and the failure to wear and properly wear a seat belt," police said in a news release issued Monday.
According to the Ministry of Transportation Ontario Driver's Handbook, the risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five times greater for people in vehicles that crash at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit on a highway with a posted limit of 100 km/h. That risk increases on roads with lower speed limits.
