Airshow No Place For Drones

Airshow London officials are asking those planning on attending the country's largest military air demonstration next weekend to leave their drones at home.

Rules laid out by Transport Canada already prohibit drone enthusiasts from flying their device in commercial air space. But for the airshow, so called "no drone zones" have been expanded from the normal 5.5 km radius to 16 km around the London International Airport. The expanded restriction area will be in place from September 21 to 25.

“Drones can be unpredictable and very dangerous if flown too close to commercial or military aircraft. Transport Canada has identified a safe distance and we are asking and reminding drone owners and operators to be aware and comply," said Gerry Vanderhoek, the show's air operations director.

He notes that operating a drone in the airspace around the airport could affect arriving or practicing aircrafts' ability to do so safely.

Anyone caught flying a drone in the no drone zone could face federal charges, fines up to $25,000, and jail time.

London's second annual airshow takes off at the London International Airport on September 22. The Canadian Forces Snowbirds Demonstration Team, the CF-18 Hornet Demonstration Team, and the US Air Force F-35 Lightning II fighter jet are among those slated to perform throughout the show's three-day run.

Last year’s two-day airshow saw 20,000 people pass through the gates, despite being rained out on the first day.
