Man Charged In Deaths Of Over 1,000 Pigs

The OSPCA says charges have been laid against a 27-year-old man after a horrific case of cruelty and neglect.

On February 17, Ontario SPCA officers were called to a farm in Langton, in Norfolk County, over concerns about how pigs at the farm were being treated. When they arrived, they found a manure-filled barn with an estimated 1,265 dead pigs. Another 250 had to be euthanized on site because of their condition.

The OSPCA says the pigs were left without food in the dark barn.

The accused, who now lives in Tavistock, is charged with eight counts of animal cruelty, one count of causing distress to an animal, one count of permitting an animal to be in distress, and six counts of failing to comply with prescribed standards of care.

“There is no excuse for not providing the proper care your animals require,” says Bonnie Bishop, senior inspector - farm animal welfare for Ontario SPCA. “Failure to do so can have serious legal consequences."

If you see an animal in distress, or suspect animal cruelty, call 310-SPCA (7722) to report it to the Ontario SPCA’s province-wide animal cruelty reporting centre.
