Attempted Murder Charges Laid After Man Struck By Vehicle

Two people are facing charges, including attempted murder, after a gun was pulled and a man was struck by a vehicle on the Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation.

The Ontario Provincial Police say on May 11 before 1am, three people attended a residence on Oneida Rd. to "confront" the occupants of the home.  Police say an altercation ensued when two of the occupants exited the home, and one of them pulled out a gun.  The same person then drove a vehicle toward the three visitors.

One man was struck and injured by the vehicle and a woman was narrowly missed. The extent of the man's injuries are unknown.

On May 12, a man and a woman were arrested by the Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation Police, and the Middlesex County OPP Crime Unit executed a search warrant at the residence.

As a result, 33-year-old Vanessa Cornelius of Oneida First Nation has been charged with the following offences:

  • Two counts of attempted murder
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm
  • Assault
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance (cocaine)
  • Two counts of possession of a Schedule II substance (other drugs)
  • Two counts of possession of a Schedule I substance (other drugs)
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance (cannabis marijuana under 30 g)
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance (cannabis resin over 1 g)
  • Producing a Schedule II substance (cannabis marijuana)
Layton Elijah, 29, of Oneida First Nation has also been charged with the following offences:
  • Two counts of assault with a weapon
  • Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Two counts of possession of a Schedule I substance
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance (cocaine)
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance (other drugs)
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance (cannabis marijuana under 30 g)
  • Possession of a Schedule II substance (cannabis resin over 1 g)
  • Producing a Schedule II substance (cannabis marijuana)
Both will appear in a London court on May 17.
