London Cops Charged With Assault

Two London police officers are facing assault charges after a probe by the Special Investigations Unit.

The SIU launched an investigation in June of 2016 after an incident in south London.

According to the SIU, the officers were called to a plaza in the area of Wharncliffe Rd. and Baseline Rd. on Thursday, June 16, 2016. When they arrived, there was an interaction with a 40-year-old man. The SIU says the interaction continued in front of an apartment building on Highland Ave.

The man was injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

In a statement from the SIU, it says Director Tony Loparco, has "reasonable grounds to believe two London Police Service officers committed criminal offences in relation to the arrest."

Constable Theresa Clayton is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm. Constable Jeff Lake is charged with one count of assault.

Both officers are to appear in court on May 29. A London police spokesperson says both officer are still on active duty.
