CTV Cuts Local Sports Coverage

Cuts to local sports coverage have led to layoffs at CTV stations in London, Windsor and Kitchener.

The cuts were announced by CTV on Tuesday, and follow a similar move earlier this year when local sports coverage was eliminated at CTV in Barrie, in favour of the CTV national sports feed.

Canadian labour union Unifor said it's "another demonstration of the need for urgent action on the crisis in media."

"People turn to local television to keep up on what is happening in their communities," said Unifor Media Director Howard Law in a media release. "These cuts give people less of a reason to turn to local news."

The CTV station in London currently features sports broadcasters Norman James and Brent Lale, while Bob Bellacicco is the sportscaster in Windsor.

Unifor said it is calling on the government to move quickly on the review of the industry outlined in 2017 federal budget.

"There are some simple moves the federal government could make to help ensure the viability of this vital industry, including regulatory and tax changes," said Law.
