Auto Thefts Way Up This Year

London police are reporting a considerable increase in vehicle thefts so far this year.

According to figures released Monday, there have been 306 vehicles stolen in London as of March 26, 2017. That's more than twice the number that had been stolen by the same day in 2016.

Of the 306 stolen vehicles, 40 were GMC Sierra pickup trucks and 33 were Chevrolet Silverado pickups. Most of those were from the model years 2000-2006, which police believe may have something to do with the security features on those vehicles.

Police are reminding vehicle owners to protect their property and recommend the following steps:

  • Where available, park your vehicle in your garage or in a well-lit, open place
  • Use a steering wheel locking device
  • Install an alarm
Police say the thefts of vehicles this year have happened in all parts of the city.
