Fewer City Employees On Sunshine List

The number of municipal employees in London making more than $100,000 a year dropped slightly in 2016.

According to a report headed to the Corporate Services Committee on Tuesday, 390 city employees made the Sunshine List last year, that's down from 400 in 2015.

The drop is largely attributed to fewer managers earning six-figures. Last year saw 127 managers make the list, 14 fewer than the previous year. Topping the list of highest paid city employees was former city manager Art Zuidema, who earned $246,277.86.

The number of members of the London Professional Fire Fighter Association on the list grew to 256, five more than in 2015. That figure could change depending on the outcome of arbitration talks between the firefighters' association and the city. The firefighters have been working under a contract that expired at the end of 2010.

The number of Service Employees International Union members on the list jumped to five, from one the previous year, while the names of only two London Civic Employees Union members appear, down from four in 2015.

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, introduced in 1996 by the Mike Harris government, requires the release of the names of all public sector employees earning $100,000 or more in salary and benefits. The act includes employees with municipalities, hospitals, schools, and any publicly funded organization. The salary disclosure has to be filed with the Ontario Ministry of Finance by the end of March.
