City Golf Courses Set To Open

Golfers anxious to hit the greens won't have to wait much longer in London.

The city's three municipal golf courses, River Road, Fanshawe, and Thames Valley, will open for the season on Tuesday.

The relatively mild winter is being credited with the earlier than normal opening of the municipal courses.

"We've had a couple of seasons where we have got going before this but typically we try to open around that first weekend in April. So we are a little bit ahead of schedule," said Scott Stafford, division manager of parks and community sports in London.

Tree lined fairways took a bit of a beating when exceptionally strong winds hit the area earlier this month. But crews worked tirelessly to get downed limbs cleared in time for the season opener.

Stafford expects the near double-digit weather expected next week will also help draw golfers back onto the course.

"It's a slow build but everyone always has that pent up demand at this early time of year. The avid golfers are anxious to get out there, try out their new equipment, see their friends and do what they love," said Stafford.

Depending on course conditions, the use of golf carts might be limited. Those who require the use of a cart are encouraged to call pro shop staff or look for updates on the City of London Municipal Golf Facebook and Twitter pages.
