EB Hwy. 401 Re-Opens After Truck Fire

Hwy. 401 is completely open again at Union Rd. after a truck fire prompted Middlesex OPP to shut down a section of the roadway.

The eastbound lanes were closed around 2:45pm on Thursday after a transport truck went into the ditch west of Colonel Talbot Rd. and caught fire.

OPP say the transport was not carrying any dangerous materials, however an undetermined amount of diesel was spilled. The Ministry of the Environment has been contacted about the spill.

Fortunately , no one was hurt.

Charges are pending in second collision involving a pair of transport trucks roughly two hours later.

Elgin OPP say one big rig hit the other in the eastbound lanes of the highway east of Iona Rd. around 4:50pm. The force of the crash sent the cab of one of the transports flying. It came to rest in the centre median.

One of the truck drivers was taken to hospital with minor injuries, the other was not hurt.

Police say the investigation is on-going but anticipate charges will be laid.
