UPDATE: Man Recovered After Falling Through Ice

A man who had fallen through ice in Norfolk County has been found dead.

The OPP's Under-Water Search and Recovery Unit recovered the man's body Sunday afternoon in the pond at the Waterford North Conservation Area.  The 68-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and has been identified as Jani Daliyanazlou of Hamilton.

The incident took place around 5pm Saturday.  OPP say Daliyanazlou and a nine-year-old boy from Burlington were on the pond when the man fell through while ice fishing.  The boy, who was skating nearby, tried to help Daliyanazlou but he fell through also.

Bystanders came to the aid of both victims and were able to pull the nine-year-old out of about 15 feet of water.  They tried several times to rescue Daliyanazlou but were unsuccessful.

OPP and the Norfolk County Fire and Rescue Services searched but their efforts were suspended Saturday night due to safety issues.  The search resumed Sunday morning with Daliyanazlou's body recovered shortly after noon.

The OPP praised the Good Samaritans who pulled the boy out and got him to safety.

"The OPP would like to take this opportunity to thank the citizens that assisted with this incident," said Constable Ed Sanchuk of the Norfolk County OPP. "Their courageous actions resulted in saving the life of this young boy. I would also like to extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased."
