Man, Child Fall Through Ice in Norfolk County

A man is missing after he and a child fell through ice Saturday in Norfolk County.

The incident took place around 5pm at the Waterford North Conservation Area.  Ontario Provincial Police say the 68-year-old Hamilton man and a nine-year-old boy from Burlington were on the pond when the man, who was ice fishing, fell through.  The boy, who was skating nearby, tried to help the man but he fell through also.

Bystanders came to the aid of both victims and were able to pull the nine-year-old out of about 15 feet of water.  There were several attempts to rescue the man but they were unsuccessful.  The victims were about 80 feet off the shoreline, police said.  No information has been released as to the boy's identity or his condition.

OPP and the Norfolk County Fire and Rescue Services searched but their efforts were suspended Saturday night due to safety issues.

The OPP's Under-Water Search and Recovery Unit has been notified and the search is expected to resume Sunday morning.

Concession Rd 8 was closed between Hwy 24 and Robinson Rd during the investigation.  The conservation area's entrance and pond access will remain closed until further notice.
