Jail Guard Injured In EMDC Fire

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has confirmed one jail guard was injured in a fire at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre.

Emergency crews were called to the provincial jail on Exeter Rd. when objects, including a mattress, were set ablaze inside of a cell around 9pm on Thursday.

"When the fire was detected, correctional staff acted quickly and moved inmates out of their cells temporarily," said ministry spokesperson Andrew Morrison in an emailed statement. "Firefighters attended the facility and the facility was cleared of smoke. London police also attended and the ministry gratefully acknowledges their support."

Morrison added that no inmates were injured but one correctional officer did suffer minor injuries.

Inmates were returned to their cells before midnight.

The fire, which caused roughly $500 in damage, is under investigation by the ministry.
