Dream Lottery Winner Announced

It's a decision that plenty of people would love to have to make.

Brenda and John Held have to decide whether to take $1-million cash or a home valued at over $1.3-million with a luxury car in the driveway.

The London couple had their name drawn Wednesday morning and are the grand prize winners of the 20th annual Dream Lottery.

Brenda, 61, was in her housecoat tackling some online banking when she received the call that she had won.

"When she said, 'are you sitting down', I thought it was someone making me a great offer for something like a timeshare. Then she said she was from the Childrens Foundation and I thought maybe they had a breakthrough. But then I thought, they wouldn't be calling me, so I was kind of guarded. Then it hit me when I could hear the cheering in the background that this is real," said Brenda

She quickly told her husband John, 62, who had been taking out the garbage when the call came in.

"I thought for sure she was pulling my leg," said John, a retired London firefighter and former player for the London Knights. "We have a lot of friends who would do that sort of thing."

Still on the phone, Brenda was quick to mention that when she bought the ticket she wasn't even thinking about the possibility of winning.

"I didn't buy it for the house, even though I had seen the house online. I always buy it for the hospital," said Brenda. "I have a lot of family that works for the hospital and they do so many good things."

Since 1996, the Dream Lottery has raised a net total of more than $28.2-million in support of the Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Care, and the London Health Sciences Centre.

"Those are unrestricted funds so what that means is we can use them for the needs of the hospital, that maybe we wouldn't be able to fund otherwise," said John MacFarlane, president and CEO of London Health Sciences Foundation. "We use the money for things like research, state of the art equipment, also we fund a catalyst grant so then a small portion of money from the lottery can then be leveraged into much bigger research dollars. All sorts of things the government simply doesn't fund."

While the Helds haven't decided whether to take the money or the house, Brenda, a retired skating instructor, was already picturing her three grandchildren enjoying the indoor rink in the basement and having their own bedrooms upstairs.

"I still don't believe it. It's so beautiful," said Brenda.

Kevin Harding of London was also drawn as the 50/50 plus winner. Harding, who had yet to be reached Wednesday morning by the hospital about his win, will take home a little more than $440,000.

Lottery officials spent much of Tuesday drawing the winners for the remaining prizes, of which there are more than 2,000. A full list of winners will be published on www.dreamitwinit.ca on January 26.
