Christmas Tree Pickup Starts Saturday

Streets in parts of London will likely be lined with old Christmas trees on Friday night.

Saturday marks the first of two days of curbside Christmas tree pickup. City crews will starting collecting old trees in zones C, D, and E.

Trees will be picked in zones A, B, and F on Saturday, January 14.

City officials announced just before Christmas that there would be no drop-off depots scattered across the city this year like in years past. Instead, residents could just put their tree at the curb for pickup.

"We hope that Londoners will put those trees out at the curb for 7am on their Saturday, without decorations and tinsel, without lights, and without the Christmas tree stand," said Jay Stanford, director of environment, fleet and solid waste for the city.

Trees in plastic bags will not be collected.

Stanford notes anyone who misses their designated Saturday still has other options to dispose of their old tree.

"They will be able to use the EnviroDepots, those are open on winter hours - Saturdays and Wednesdays," said Stanford. "Some people just keep their tree around for a while. It is nice to have it in the backyard. It's great for birds, they use it to find places to get out of the inclement weather and in that case you can put it to the curb for the yard material collection weeks which begin in the middle of March."

All trees collected will be chipped and composted.
