Former LPFFA President Blasts City Hall Brass

A former president of the London Professional Fire Fighters Association is accusing two top city officials of ruining city hall.

John Hassan made the comments in a video posted to Twitter on Sunday, one day after his retirement. The less than one minute long video opens with Hassan holding a list of milestones from his 27-year career and a card thanking him for his years of service. The card is signed by City Manager Art Zuidema and Head of Human Resources Veronica McAlea Major.

"Lately the question has been asked, who is running city hall? I think a more appropriate question is, who is ruining city hall?" Hassan said in the video.

He then refers to Zuidema and McAlea Major as the "chief culprits."

"They won't be missed by me," Hassan said. "In fact, they're probably two of the top reasons I took retirement six years before I needed to."

Hassan then casually places the card in a paper shredder as he says "out with the old and in with the new."

Zuidema and McAlea Major have not commented on the video.

The relationship between the London Professional Fire Fighters Association and the city has soured over the years with the firefighters union working without a contract since 2010. In what is considered the longest running firefighters contract dispute in Canadian history, the two sides have been unable to reach an agreement.

An arbitration hearing is set to resume this month.
