City Committee Backs Grant For World Juniors

Tourism London is a step closer to getting $500,000 of taxpayer money to help cover costs should it land the 2019 World Junior Hockey Championship.

The community and protective services committee voted unanimously in favour of a request for funds from Tourism London on Tuesday.

In addition to the grant from the city, Tourism London notes it will kick-in $100,000 and also seek additional funding from the provincial and federal governments.

The money would be conditional on London winning its joint bid with Windsor for the major sporting event.

The proposed grant now goes to Council for final approval.

The two tourism agencies announced they were strongly considering a joint bid for the hockey championship late last month. If successful it would bring the top ten Under 20 hockey teams in the world to southwestern Ontario to compete in 31 games over 11-days from December 26, 2018 to January 5, 2019.

Cities hoping to host the annual championship have until August 31 to submit their bid to Hockey Canada's Board of Directors.
