Influenza-Related Deaths On The Rise

The number of flu-related deaths in Middlesex-London this season has more than doubled.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit's weekly Influenza Surveillance Report says between March 6 and March 12 there were 88 lab confirmed cases of influenza in the region. Of those, 23 had to be hospitalized and two died.

Since influenza season began on September 1, there has only been one other death reported, bringing the total number of flu-related deaths this season to three.

Six influenza A outbreaks and one influenza B outbreak were declared in long-term care facilities.

Influenza activity across the region had been relatively calm for the past five months but health officials began noticing an increase in activity in mid-February.

Anyone who still needs a flu shot can find a clinic on the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s “Find a Flu Shot Clinic” website.
