Watch Out For Water Testing Scam

City officials are advising Londoners to be wary of people coming to the door asking to test their drinking water.

In a tweet Monday, the city reassured residents that London's water is treated to surpass provincial quality standards and discretion should be used with door-to-door salespeople.

The city says from time to time they get reports of homeowners being asked to provide water samples for analysis by salespeople, who do not work for the city. In most cases they are with private companies using high pressure sales tactics to sell home water treatment systems.

Homeowners are advised to use discretion if presented with information indicating their tap water requires additional treatment or if they are pressured to sign contracts right away at "limited time" prices.

If water quality issues do arise, city staff will have proper identification and will not try to sell any sort of product.

Results of water testing done by the city are available on its website www.london.ca.

The Ontario Ministry of Consumer Services reminds that no door-to-door sales people are authorized to make a health-based test on your water and chemical trickery may make your water look brown, just because of natural mineral content.
