2,000 Pigs Killed In Parkhill Barn Fire

Thousands of pigs are dead following the fourth barn fire to hit southern Ontario in a matter of weeks.

The North Middlesex Fire Department and Middlesex OPP were called to the farm on Parkhill Rd. outside Parkhill just before 3am Tuesday.

It took fire crews from Ailsa Craig, Grand Bend, and Thedford to extinguish the flames coming from the barn.

"Some of the pigs are deceased," says Constable Liz Melvin. "The estimate is approximately 2,000 at this point. The county fire investigator and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office are investigating and police are still on scene assisting."

There is no word on the cause of the blaze or an approximate dollar value of the damage.

A barn fire near Delaware early Sunday killed 500 goats and 30 cows. A dozen horses were killed in a stable fire in Mount Forest January 14, and 43 race horses died in a blaze that devastated Classy Lane Stables in Puslinch, south of Guelph on January 4.
