Police Hoping For Safe New Year's Eve

London police are urging those venturing out for New Year's Eve to plan ahead.

Extra officers and RIDE checkpoints will be set-up throughout the city Thursday night as police keep watch for impaired drivers.

"We are encouraging everyone to celebrate responsibly and of course if you are going to drive home, do so while sober," says Constable Ken Steeves. "We often times plan what we are going to do for New Year's Eve, where we are going to go, what we are going to wear, who we are going to be with but often times forget about how we are going to get home. Hopefully that is part of the plan and everyone gets home safely."

Police tweeted a reminder to party-goers that safety is not the only issue when it comes to impaired driving. The decision to drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs can also have an impact on where a person wakes up on New Year's Day.

Patience will also be key for revellers after ringing in the new year.

"If you're heading out for New Year's Eve expect long delays for a ride home if you don't have one planned already," says Constable Steeves. "Rather than driving home yourself we encourage you to take the alternative of a taxi, public transit or have a designated driver."

Police recommend those hosting a party make sure they serve plenty of food and non-alcoholic beverages. They say hosts should also ensure their guests have a safe ride home or offer to let them stay the night.

London Transit will be offering free bus rides between 8pm Thursday and 1am Friday and motorists will be allowed to park in municipal lots between midnight and 1pm Friday at no cost.
