Slow Start To Flu Season

It's been a slow start to the flu season, but health officials say that doesn't mean we won't see a surge after the holidays.

The Middlesex London Health Unit has reported just four lab confirmed cases of Influenza so far this season, a relatively low number for the third week of December.

"Flu from season to season can be very different and that's what we are seeing this year. If we see a slower start like this, it tends to be a milder year," says Tristan Squire-Smith, manager of infectious disease control at the health unit. "It's funny how the pendulum swings. The past couple of years have seen the pendulum swing very much towards the heavy end of the spectrum. So to see only four cases in the second or third week of December is actually on the very other end of the spectrum which is very light."

The last flu season, which ended in May, saw 328 confirmed cases of Influenza A and 43 cases of Influenza B in the region. Of those cases, 155 people were hospitalized and 14 died.

With the holiday season upon us, Squire-Smith expects there could be an upswing in the number of cases circulating.

"Anything can happen between now and the end of the flu season, so I don't want to make any predictions," says Squire-Smith. "But anytime people get together there is increased risk for transmission, not only the flu but of everything."

To lower your chance of catching the flu it's recommended you get the flu shot. It's also important to limit the spread of viruses by coughing or sneezing into your sleeve rather than your hand, and to frequently wash your hands. For those feeling ill it's best you stay home to stop the spread of germs. It's also recommended that you avoid making food for other people.
