Public Asked For Input On Police Street Checks

London residents are being asked for their input and feedback during a public consultation regarding the regulation of police street checks.

Bas Balkissoon, the parliamentary assistant to the minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, will be hosting the consultation Monday night from 6pm-8pm at Goodwill Industries on Horton St.

Police checks, also called carding, underwent scrutiny in London back in June, after concerns were raised by Ward 3 Councillor Mo Salih.

Officers with the London Police Service conducted 8,400 checks in 2014 and Salih says, after looking over the stats, he found a disproportionate number of visible minorities were stopped.

Police officers say the checks help them identify criminals.

The session will be open to the public and those wishing to attend the public consultation can RSVP by clicking here.
