Work To Rule Campaign Enters Third Week

The work to rule campaign by Ontario elementary teachers is entering its third week

Teachers have been refusing to take part in professional training, EQAO testing, and they say they won't write comments in report cards.

But field trips and extra-curriculars are still happening.

The head of the Thames Valley local of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario says he's still hoping this will be the extent of the job action.

But Craig Smith says that's up the employer.

"The ball remains in the court of the School Boards Association and the government to get back to the table and do what we want to do and have wanted to do from the outset, which is negotiate a fair contract that demonstrates respect for members as professionals and the work that they do on behalf of the students," says Smith.

He adds students and parents likely haven't noticed any differences in the classroom since the work to rule campaign began.

"The primary responsibility for teachers is and remains focused on instruction of students, supporting those students who need the additional support and to being in constant contact with the parent community, and nothing has changed in that."

He says the mood across the Thames Valley District School Board is upbeat and teachers are focused on continuing the work they do with the students.
