Staff To Review Subdivision Snow Removal

Winter is over, but council is still talking about how to deal with the snow.

At Monday's meeting of the Civic Works Committee, Ward 3 Councillor Mo Salih asked city staff to take a closer look at how the city deals with snow removal in new subdivisions.

Salih says it's the developer's responsibility to deal with winter maintenance on streets that are less than 90% filled with homes.

"There's been times when there's been a break down of communication where residents are calling the city saying 'why aren't you doing the sidewalks?'" says Salih.

He wants staff to review the current procedures.

"Having the conversation is definitely one step to make sure that everyone is happy," says Salih. "I know residents in some of the unassumed divisions in my ward are not happy."

When a road is not yet assumed by the city of London, it is up to the developer of the area to contract the city to remove snow from roads, and the company must clear the sidewalks on its own. However, once the road is assumed, it becomes part of the city's regular maintenance program.

The Civic Works Committee will review its winter maintenance policies at its next meeting on April 8.
