OPP Say Stay Off Roads

The Western Region OPP asked motorists early Saturday afternoon not to travel unless absolutely necessary due to treacherous conditions in blowing and drifting snow.

A sharp cold front has brought bitterly cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills with strong northwest winds howling across Lake Huron.

Environment Canada expects intensifying snow squalls will persist through Saturday into Sunday.

The snow squalls will likely move into Middlesex and Lambton Counties beginning early Saturday evening, affecting places like London and Strathroy. Snow squalls may eventually reach the Sarnia area later Saturday night or Sunday as winds become more northerly.

By mid afternoon Saturday there already had been numerous crashes and road closures across western region including Hwy. 402 due to snow and blowing snow.

Crashes and closures have been reported elsewhere including on highways 401, 21, 4 and 9.
