Russian Sanctions Don’t Concern Pork ProducersAugust 7, 2014 1:39pm
Russia introducing new sanctions banning all Canadian food products will not cripple local pork producers or vegetable farmers.
There are zero Ontario farmers who export their pork products to Russia. However, on a national level the Canadian Pork Council considers Russia to be the fourth most important trading partner.
“In 2012 we exported about $492-million worth of sales to Russia,” says Canadian Pork Council Executive Bill Wymenga. “These are important markets for us, we export about 2/3 of our product overall. I’ts not going to cripple us, but it will impact certain processors who have managed to get into that market. We need a healthy processors to be able to pay good prices to our producers as well.”
Wymenga tells BlackburnNews.com there may be tougher competition for local business down the road as a result of the sanctions.
