Trudeau Won't Scrap GDLS-Saudi Deal

Federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is promising all current contracts between the government and London's General Dynamics Land Systems will stand if he is elected prime minister.

Trudeau brought his campaign to London Wednesday morning for the first time.

The contract between Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government and GDLS has come under heavy fire by the NDP. The deal, agreed upon in secret, provides Saudi Arabia with $15-billion worth of armoured vehicles. The London company received $287-million from the federal government in November.

"We will not be cancelling existing contracts, but we will, however, pledge to move forward as a government in a way that is much more transparent, accountable and open. We do also plan to sign the International Arms Trade Treaty," says Trudeau.

Canada is the only NATO member to not sign the Internation Arms Trade Treaty. If it does, GDLS will be limited in what countries it can supply with armoured vehciles.

Unions have said if the new government puts an end to the deal it could cost upwards of 3,000 jobs in the region.

Trudeau also touched on his party's Canada Child Benefit and the $20-billion plan for infrastructure over the next ten years.

When asked about London's plan for light rail and rapid transit, which is estimated to cost upwards of $150-million, he responded by saying "our funding will be there."

"That is something that we would absolutely be interested in supporting if it's the priority that the city wants to put forward," says Trudeau. "Getting Canadians to and from work more reliably, more quickly and more securely doesn't just improve their productivity at work but it improves their quality of life."

Trudeau has yet to make stops in the Chatham and Windsor regions. According to his itinerary he will travel to the east coast following his stop in London.
