TPP Effects Limited In SW Ontario

Although the complete effects of the Trans Pacific Partnership have not played out, a local economist doesn't believe SW Ontario will be affected too harshly.

Dresden's Philip Shaw says increased imports will mostly impact those in supply management agriculture, like dairy farms, instead of corn and soybean producers.

"For supply management people, it's a concern. We've had a marketing system that's been developed over time to satisfy the domestic demand with a certain amount of supply, and that's always important."

However, Shaw is also seeing the good that can come from the TPP.

"80% of our trade is already with the US. Then you take a 75-76 cent US dollar into all those other markets, we have a tremendous advantage just with our foreign exchange."

Negotiations between Canada and 11 other countries are close to producing a full partnership. The governments of the 12 countries will still need to vote and approve the TPP before it comes into effect.
