Push To Bring Kindness Meters To London

You could soon see "kindness meters" popping up in London.

The brightly decorated re-purposed parking meters collect donations for charity.

Lincoln McCardle noticed kindness meters while vacationing in Ottawa and is trying to bring them to the Forest City.

So far, several businesses owners have agreed to have one installed on their property.

The plan is to choose a few different charities each month that help combat poverty and homelessness in the area.

Since the city is moving towards pay and display meters rather than the traditional change collecting meters, McCardle is hoping to get the city on board and re purpose old meters used in London, rather than buying them online.

"I assumed that we were going to have to spend a few hundred dollars on the parking meters themselves .... they (the city's parking officials) have lots in stock and they need to keep some for spare parts," notes McCardle.

He is set to ask the Civic Works Committee this week for permission to upcycle the meters.

City staff would collect the donations from the meters, since they all have one master key.

McCardle says each month people would nominate their favourite charities and the money would go to those chosen.
