Fire Department Urging Smoke Alarms In Bedrooms

Hear the beep where you sleep, that is the London Fire Department's message as Fire Prevention Week starts.

Officials are encouraging Londoners to install smoke alarms within all sleeping areas of their homes or apartments.

Legally, you must have smoke detectors outside of the bedroom area on each floor but sometimes that is not enough.

"People, particularly children and those with hearing apartments will have an opportunity to wake up to the alarm," says Deputy Fire Chief Brian McLaughlin. "Studies have indicated that there's either a hesitation becuase of a lack of ability to wake up or they don't hear the alarm at all."

On average, eight Canadians die each week in house fires.

As always, the fire department is encouraging you to make an escape plan and designate a meeting spot for all members of your family.

Below is a video of the steps you should take when you hear the smoke alarm.
