Sattler Pushing For Double-Salary Deal Ban

London West MPP Peggy Sattler is pushing the provincial government to ban double-salary deals for university presidents in wake of the Western University controversy.

Sattler addressed the president of the Treasury Board during question period yesterday at Queen's Park.

This, after the release of Justice Stephen Goudge's review of Western University's presidential compensation practices.

Goudge noted the school's president, Amit Chakma, took a double salary in 2014 in lieu of administrative leave to up his pension contributions. He says offering the double payout is not in line with practices at other peer institutions.

“Speaker, this is yet another example of this government’s failure to reign in executive compensation. In the last few months, Ontarians learned about a $4-million wage package for the CEO of Hydro One, $1-million salaries for CCAC home care contractors, and $5.7-million bonuses for Pan Am Games executives," notes Sattler. “Speaker, will the minister act now to prohibit million dollar salaries in the post secondary sector, by implementing the Private Member's Bill I introduced in April?"

When the 2014 public salary disclosure revealed President Chakma's double payout it spurred protests on campus, an attempted vote of non-confidence and political action.
