SIU Clears Officers In Death Of Man Wanted For Cellphone Shooting

The province's police watchdog says there will be no charges in connection to the drowning death of Muhab Sultan, the 23-year-old man wanted in the deadly Jeremy Cook cellphone shooting.

Sultan's body was pulled from Ottawa's Rideau River in June, days after he disappeared beneath the surface during a police chase.

The SIU says on June 24, two officers travelling by bike stopped a green Toyota being driven by Sultan. The officers were questioning Sultan in connection to the London shooting death of Jeremy Cook when the SIU says Sultan hit one of the officers with the stolen car and drove away.

When they caught up, the passenger in the car was arrested but Sultan fled on foot, taking refuge in a nearby backyard shed. The homeowner called police and that is when Sultan headed for the Rideau River.

When police arrived they say Sultan was screaming for help in the middle of the river and struggling to get to shore. Officers then tried to get to Sultan, but he disappeared before they could reach him.

His body was pulled from the river three days later on June 27. An autopsy shows the cause of death was drowning, pending results of toxicological testing.

Sultan was wanted for second degree murder in connection to a deadly London shooting.

Jeremy Cook, 18, was gunned down while tracking his lost cellphone. Investigators say he used GPS tracking to trace the device, which led him to a car full of men in the Highbury area. When they tried to drive away with the cellphone, Cook grabbed onto the car and was shot.

Mohamed Ibrahim Sail , 24, also faces a charge of second degree murder in connection to Cook's death. He has since turned himself into police and the case is before the courts.
