"Union Busting" Tactics Called Out

The President of the London District Labour Council says Mayor Matt Brown could end the strike by the city's inside workers today.

All he has to do is agree to send the labour dispute to binding arbritration.

Patti Dalton says it would be a sign of good faith on the part of the Mayor and city manager Art Zuidema, one that she suggests is needed after the city's decision to hire replacement workers.

"The Mayor could end this strike today," says Dalton. "He could do what I think was a principled call, to send all outstanding issues to binding arbritation."

On Tuesday morning, members of the Labour Council and other supporters blocked vehicles, which Dalton says contained replacement workers, from entering city hall.

Dalton says they will "ramp up" their support of the strikers, but wouldn't elaborate.

"We're not going to reveal any strategies. I think the element of surprise is important," says Dalton.

But Dalton says the Mayor and the city manager should not expect an easy ride if the strike isn't settled soon. She says a line has been crossed.

"The blatant attempt at union busting with Art Zuidema inviting workers to cross the picket line, we find that absolutely shameful."

Dalton also claims many members of city council were unaware of the plan to hire replacement workers before they were hired. She says members of the Labour Council will canvass city councillors to urge them to try to convince Mayor Brown to agree to binding arbitration.
