East London Standoff Ends Peacefully

A standoff that started Monday morning has ended peacefully, nearly 24 hours after it began.

Officers were called to a Madison Ave. home in the city's east end around 11am on Monday morning.

The landlord had tried to evict his tenant with the help of the sheriff, but the man refused to leave the home. Police say he armed himself with a crossbow and threatened to use it if anyone came inside.

Heavily armed officers flooded the area, but the man refused to surrender. Negotiations continued overnight and the OPP's tactical team was called in.

The man finally, who has since been identified as Peter Muir,  surrendered around 11am on Tuesday morning.

"We have had the negotiators on scene communicating with him throughout the night. We were able to communicate with him on several occasions," says Constable Ken Steeves. "Even though it took some time, the end result was exactly what we would be hoping for. It ended peacefully and there were no injuries sustained by anyone...There was concern for neighbours in the surrounding area because we had information that he was armed with a crossbow and prepare to use it. This is a potentially lethal weapon, we hope and were glad that he didn't use it, but if he had there was danger to their safety and potentially their lives."

The 46-year-old is known to police and arrested for breaching his parole.  He is in custody and charged with breach of probation. Officers are searching the home on Madison Ave. for weapons.
